How to download transactions from Wells Fargo
Sign in to Wells Fargo online banking on a computer and open the account activity for the account you want. Look for a Download Account Activity option (it is often near the account activity or statements area). Pick the account, the date range and a file format. The choices typically include a comma-delimited spreadsheet file and Quicken or QuickBooks formats.
Choose comma delimited to get a CSV. If a QuickBooks format is available and works for you, you can upload that to QuickBooks directly instead.
Menus change. Wells Fargo updates its online banking from time to time, so the exact button names may differ from what's described here. If you can't find the option, search Wells Fargo's help pages for “download transactions”.
What a Wells Fargo CSV looks like
The comma-delimited download is unusual: it has no header row, and every value is in quotes. Each line has five columns:
| Column 1 | Column 2 | Column 3 | Column 4 | Column 5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| "01/05/2026" | "-48.20" | "*" | "" | "SHELL OIL 57444 SPRINGFIELD" |
| "01/06/2026" | "1850.00" | "*" | "" | "ACME CORP PAYROLL" |
| "01/08/2026" | "-300.00" | "*" | "1042" | "CHECK # 1042" |
In order, the columns are the date (month-first), the signed amount, an asterisk placeholder, a check number when there is one, and the description. Without headings, QuickBooks can't tell which column is which, and if you add headings by hand it's easy to get the order wrong.
How the converter handles a file with no headings
The converter looks at the values rather than the column names. The column where every value is a date becomes the date, the numeric column becomes the amount, and the longest text column becomes the description. The asterisk column is ignored. Check the preview: if anything was picked wrongly, open Change which column is which, set Header row to “No header row”, and choose the columns yourself.
Because there is no header to identify the bank, the converter works out the date order from the dates themselves. On this page it assumes US month-first dates when every date is ambiguous (for example 01/05/2026), which is correct for Wells Fargo.
Common problems with Wells Fargo files
- QuickBooks treats the first transaction as the heading row. With no header, the first transaction disappears or the mapping screen shows transaction values as column names. Converting first fixes this.
- Check numbers. They appear in their own column and also inside the description, so they stay visible in QuickBooks.
- Credit cards. Check the preview after converting a card export. Purchases should show as money out; if they show as money in, tick Swap money in and money out, and import into the credit card account.
- Re-saving in Excel. Opening the file in Excel and saving it again can strip the quotes or change dates. Convert the original download instead.
Import the converted file into QuickBooks Online
- In QuickBooks Online, go to Transactions → Bank transactions and choose Upload transactions (it may sit under the arrow next to Link account).
- Select the file you downloaded from the converter, then pick the QuickBooks account it belongs to. Use the credit card account for a card export — not a bank account.
- For a CSV, map Date, Description and Amount, and choose the date format shown in step 3 of the converter. A QBO file skips this screen.
- Review the transactions in the For review tab, then compare the QuickBooks balance with your statement for the same date.

Frequently asked questions
Why doesn’t my Wells Fargo CSV have column headings?
That’s how the comma-delimited download is built: five quoted columns with no header row. The converter identifies the columns from their contents, so you don’t need to add headings.
What is the asterisk column in a Wells Fargo file?
It is a placeholder that carries no useful information. The converter ignores it.
Will the date order be right?
Yes. Wells Fargo uses month-first dates, and this page assumes month-first when the dates alone can’t tell. You can change the date order in step 2 if needed.
Can I use the QuickBooks download from Wells Fargo instead?
Yes, if it’s offered for your account it can be uploaded directly. Use the CSV and this converter when you need to check or edit the data first.
Is my data uploaded?
No. Everything happens in your browser; the converted file is saved straight to your device.
