How to export a Monzo statement as CSV
Monzo exports are made in the app. Open the account you want, find the option to download or export a statement, choose the date range and pick CSV as the format (PDF and other formats are offered too). The file is then saved or shared from your phone — email it to yourself or save it somewhere you can reach from your computer.
Monzo Business accounts can connect to Xero with a bank feed. If you have a feed, use the CSV to fill gaps — for example, the months before the feed was set up.
Menus change. Monzo updates its online banking from time to time, so the exact button names may differ from what's described here. If you can't find the option, search Monzo's help pages for “download transactions”.
What a Monzo CSV looks like
Monzo includes far more columns than most banks. The full heading row is:
Transaction ID, Date, Time, Type, Name, Emoji, Category, Amount, Currency, Local amount, Local currency, Notes and #tags, Address, Receipt, Description, Category split, Money Out, Money In
A few typical rows, showing just the useful columns:
| Date | Type | Name | Amount | Description |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 05/01/2026 | Card payment | Pret A Manger | -6.45 | PRET A MANGER LONDON GBR |
| 06/01/2026 | Faster payment | Acme Ltd | 1850.00 | SALARY JAN |
| 07/01/2026 | Pot transfer | Savings | -200.00 | pot_0000aBcD |
Name is Monzo's cleaned-up merchant or payee name, and it's usually the best value for Xero's Payee field. Description is the raw text from the payment network. Amount is signed in pounds, while Money Out and Money In repeat the same figure split into two columns — you need one or the other, never both.
Common problems with Monzo files in Xero
- Amounts counted twice. If you map both Amount and Money In / Money Out by hand, totals double. The converter uses the signed Amount only.
- Pot transfers. Moving money into or out of a Pot shows up as a transaction. Decide how you treat Pots in Xero: either set up the Pot as its own bank account and reconcile the transfers, or treat Pot movements as transfers you can match off. Don't delete them, or your balance won't match.
- Foreign currency spending. Local amount is what you paid abroad; Amount is what left your account in pounds. Use the pound amount for a GBP bank account in Xero.
- Day-first dates. Monzo writes dates as DD/MM/YYYY. The converter recognises the Monzo layout and reads them day-first.
Import the converted file into Xero
- In Xero, go to Accounting → Bank accounts, find the account and choose Manage account → Import a statement.
- Upload the file. For an OFX file, Xero imports straight away. For a CSV, Xero asks you to match the columns: Date → Transaction Date, Amount → Transaction Amount, Payee → Payee, Description → Description.
- Check the preview Xero shows, complete the import, then reconcile as usual.
Our Xero import guide covers each screen and the messages you might see.
Frequently asked questions
Which Monzo column should be the payee in Xero?
The Name column. It contains Monzo’s cleaned-up merchant or payee name, which makes Xero bank rules match more reliably than the raw Description.
Why do my totals double when I import a Monzo CSV?
Monzo provides the same value in Amount and again in Money In / Money Out. Map only one of them. The converter uses the signed Amount column.
How should I handle Monzo Pot transfers in Xero?
Keep them. Either add the Pot as its own bank account in Xero and reconcile the transfers between the two, or code them as transfers. Deleting them will stop your balance matching.
Can I export Monzo transactions from a computer?
Statement exports are made in the Monzo app. Save or email the CSV to yourself, then open this page on any device.
Is my Monzo data uploaded?
No. The file is converted inside your browser and never sent to a server.
